… et en complément voici la mise au point que je reçois de Masterfile :
To: Masterfile’s Contributing Artists:
Masterfile acquires Crestock microstock agency
Effective July 1, 2010, Masterfile Corporation acquired the assets of Crestock, a microstock agency based in Norway (www.crestock.com).
It's no secret that the microstock business has revolutionized the global stock photo industry – and not in a good way for many pro photographers and agencies. It has been hard on those of us who earn our living from licensing premium rights-managed and royalty-free images. But microstock is growing like crazy – and it won’t go away.
There are millions of people around the world buying $1 images every day. We want to sell to them and, with Crestock, we can do that. At the same time, there is a global transition among our mid-to-large-sized clients toward using microstock and subscriptions for their small projects and we need to be there too if we want to continue getting their high end business. The Crestock acquisition will enable Masterfile to grow amidst powerful market forces and to compete against corporate juggernauts.
We will retain the Crestock brand and run it as a separate business unit from our headquarters in Toronto. The current Crestock personnel are being retained, operating remotely. I will oversee the transition as we recruit additional staff and management with microstock experience.
We do not plan to offer microstock licensing on masterfile.com in the foreseeable future or use the Masterfile sales teams to sell microstock. However, we have a link at the bottom of each search results page on the Crestock website site that enables the client to perform the same search on masterfile.com with one click. We're hoping to up-sell some clients who are looking for more options or need larger file sizes than what’s available at Crestock.
We are launching a premium subscription offering on Masterfile.com next week.
Separately and not connected to the Crestock acquisition, we have been working for months preparing a subscription offering to compete against the flood of subscriptions being offered by the likes of Getty and most of the microstock companies out there. Our best clients are buying subscriptions from those people so now we’ll be in that game too.
Masterfile’s initial subscription offering is mainly drawn from RF content licensed from other independent RF brands, combined with our wholly-owned RF productions. We have not included any images that you may have supplied to Masterfile for the Radius premium RF collection. The individual image returns on subscriptions are very small, so we aren’t inviting individual photographers to participate in this adventure unless we determine that it would be worthwhile for both of us.
But we still believe in premium licensing!
While our foray into microstock and subscriptions will be pursued with enthusiasm, we are not abandoning the ship that got us here. Our core business still generates a lot of money and we have plans in place to help it grow. We are working with the aptly-named Rethink Communications – an award winning Canadian strategic/creative communications company (http://www.rethinkcanada.com/) to help us breathe new life into the high end of our business too.
If you have questions about any of this, you are welcome to contact me personally.
